Dental for less though the Careington discount dental Plan

I currently do not have dental insurance and I am living on a very fixed income.   My new job however will be providing health and dental benefits but not until I been with them for a year as a part time employee or six months as a full time employee.  Right now I am part time hoping to get into full time either way I do not have any dental currently and I would like to see a dentist about my teeth.  I was told by a friend that I should get a dental discount plan since they are low in cost and I can cancel if and when I get my benefits though my job.  They have the Careington plan but how do dental discount plans work and how are they really saving you money on your dental care?
