When should you replace dental fillings.

Be aware that whenever you remove and replace dental fillings, there is always the chance that a tooth could be damaged during the process, especially where the filling is particularly large and/or deep.  But no one wants to go to the dentist and replace dental fillings that seem to be in perfect working order.  Unfortunately, it’s not easy to replace dental fillings, but it can be well worth the effort.  Fillings are made to last as long as possible, but they still only last for so long.  On average, 10 – 15 years seems to be about the limit for most fillings.

The longer bad fillings stay in your mouth, the more likely you will need crowns and root canals to restore the teeth.  If the existing fillings are not too big and there is enough healthy tooth, then the fillings can be replaced with new ones.  Leaving old dental fillings in place can also harm your gums, since they can trap the plaque which causes gum disease.

A dentist will be able to evaluate your dental fillings.  You will not be able to tell on your own when your fillings start to fail.  Everything wears out and your dental fillings are no exception.
